GADS: description of global distribution files

These files contain aerosol total number densities and the mixing ratios of aerosol components on a 5° x 5° latitude / longitude grid. The abbreviations in the table header (which is not included in the current version of GADS) are described below:

• LAT: latitude from 90° (N) to -90° (S). For each latitude, all longitudes are listed consecutively.
• LON: longitudes from -180° (W) to 175° (E).
• NL: number of aerosol layers. Usually, NL = 1, but in certain cases, there is a layer of mineral transported aerosol in a second layer (NL = 2). In cases with NL = 2, the information for the 2nd layer (starting with -UNUSED-) is supplied in the next line (see example at 40° latitude).
• PN: profile number (1 .. 7). 7 different profiles are used in GADS. They are defined (and descibed) in the file profiles.dat.
• -UNUSED-: The following 3 columns are not used in the current version of GADS.
• N: total particle number density at surface in particles / cm³.
• NC: number of aerosol components. Up to 4 aerosol components are used at each grid point. The following items IC and MR describe type and mixing ratio of each of these components. If there are 4 components, the 4th one comes in the next line.
• IC: number describing the aerosol component (see Table of components).
• MR: mixing ratio of actual component.
